A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and management of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Train, a line constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We will meticulously determine the reasons behind this tragedy,” affirmed the national leader.
The official reported that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official added plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term concluded the year before. This rail line was a hallmark of his leadership's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both rail lines was managed by the armed forces, marking a dramatic increase of its responsibilities in national works. They were executed at an accelerated pace, defying forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had also raised significant concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an previous crash this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced two non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party called for an prompt pause in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This pause was requested until the completion of a comprehensive safety audit. The party emphasized that the loss of life "requires prompt explanations."
In reply, the president insisted that the train had been operating in full accordance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these vital projects.
